Getting started

What is Tally and who is it for?

Tally is a web app for self-employed people (saimnieciskās darbības veicējs) and sole traders in Latvia. It brings personal and work money into one place: you upload a statement, Tally sorts transactions into categories and separates transfers between your own accounts and cash, and for work you issue invoices that follow Latvian rules.

You can use it without a business too — simply as a clear map of your finances.

How much does it cost?

It's free during the beta. All features are open and no card is needed. If a paid plan appears, we'll tell you in advance, and a free option will remain.

Do I need to connect my bank?

No. You upload a statement (CSV) yourself or add expenses by hand. Tally doesn't connect to your bank and has no access to your money — it cannot transfer or pay anything.

Automatic import via open banking will come later, after we obtain the required authorisation, and it will be optional.

Which banks does import support?

Right now — SEB statements in CSV format, which you can download in internet banking for any period. Swedbank, Citadele, Luminor and Revolut statements are in progress. Expenses from other sources can be added manually.

Which languages does Tally support?

Latvian, Russian and English. Switch with one button in the header; the choice is remembered on your device.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Tally is a website that works well on a phone: take receipt photos with the camera or pick them from your gallery. No app store install needed.

Statements & transactions

How do I upload an SEB statement?

In SEB internet banking open your account statement, choose the period and download it as CSV. In Tally open “Import” and pick the file — you'll see a preview, then confirm.

After import Tally shows how many transactions were categorised automatically and how many are worth checking.

What if I upload the same statement twice?

No duplicates: Tally recognises transactions it already has and skips them. Overlapping periods are fine.

Why don't transfers between my own accounts count as spending?

Moving €500 from one of your accounts to another is neither income nor spending. Counting such transfers would double your “spending” and “income”.

Tally recognises your accounts (they appear on import and in Settings) and shows transfers separately — they stay out of the statistics.

In what order are transactions shown?

By when each transaction actually happened, not when the bank booked it. Card payments are often booked a day later, so Tally reads the real time from the transaction details.

Can I add an expense by hand?

Yes, on the “Transactions” page. Handy for cash purchases and anything that isn't in a statement.

Categories & insights

How does Tally categorise spending?

First your own rules apply, then a built-in dictionary of Latvian shops and services, and whatever is still unknown is recognised by AI.

Where it isn't sure (is Bolt a ride or food?), Tally sets the likely category and marks it “to check”. You can change any category.

What does “remember for this merchant” do?

If you change a category and tap “remember”, the choice applies to all transactions from that shop — past and future. A plain edit changes just one transaction.

What are “Obligations”, “Essentials” and “Wants”?

These are the levels Tally groups spending by. Obligations — what you pay regardless (housing, loans, taxes). Essentials — basic costs (food, transport, health). Wants — what you could cut (cafés, subscriptions, shopping).

So you see not only where money goes but where there's room. For your own categories you can pick the level.

What's the difference between “Net” and “On accounts now”?

“Net” is the flow for the chosen period: income minus spending. It can be negative if you spent more than you received that month — that's not a debt.

“On accounts now” is the real balance on your accounts at this moment. It doesn't depend on the period.

How does Tally find recurring payments?

From repeated charges to the same payee with a similar amount and interval. Fixed ones (rent, loan) are shown apart from subscriptions, with the monthly total at the bottom.

Receipts

Do I have to add receipts?

No. Every transaction is categorised automatically anyway.

A receipt is only needed to split one purchase into several categories (say, at Rimi: groceries to personal, a cable to business) or to record a cash purchase.

How do I add a receipt?

Take a photo with the camera, pick up to 5 photos from your gallery, or enter it by hand. A long receipt is easiest as a panorama shot in your camera app, then picked from the gallery.

Tally reads the shop, date, items and total — you can correct anything before saving.

How is a receipt linked to a statement transaction?

Tally looks for a payment with the same amount within a few days and a similar shop name. The strongest signal is the last 4 card digits printed on the receipt.

If several payments fit, Tally doesn't guess — it asks you to choose.

What if the items don't add up to the receipt total?

Usually it's a discount: item prices are printed before it. Tally shows “was / discount / after discount” per line, and if data is missing it offers to spread the discount proportionally across items.

The paid total is used, so the expense is correct. If a receipt was read imprecisely (crumpled, faded, very long), it's flagged — trust its per-item split less.

What happens if I upload the same receipt twice?

Tally warns that a receipt with the same shop, amount and day already exists and lets you open it. You can still save — two identical purchases in a day do happen.

Cash & other accounts

Why isn't a cash withdrawal counted as spending?

Taking cash from an ATM isn't spending yet — the money moved into your wallet. Tally shows withdrawals separately and lets you mark what the cash went on, so spending is neither understated nor doubled.

What is an “estimate”?

An expense you mark yourself where there's no statement — for example, “€18 of the €200 I withdrew went on the market”. Such entries are clearly labelled “estimate”.

If you later upload that account's statement, estimates within its period are replaced by real transactions — nothing is counted twice.

What about an account at another bank whose statement I don't upload?

Tally sees how much you transferred there and shows a card: “came in / accounted / left”. Mark spending by hand, or upload the statement any time to make the data exact.

Invoices

Are Tally invoices right for Latvia?

Invoices use the Latvian RĒĶINS format: your and your client's details, continuous numbering, issue and due dates, the amount and — if you're VAT-registered — VAT. If you aren't, add “Nav PVN maksātājs” to the note in your profile and it will appear on every invoice.

Before your first invoice, fill in your details in Settings (name, registration number, bank, IBAN). Tally helps you prepare invoices, but the issuer is responsible for their content.

How do I turn on invoicing?

Enable the business section in Settings — a “Business” section with invoices and clients appears.

Can I backdate an invoice?

Yes, the issue date can be set up to 60 days back — for example, if the money has already arrived but you hadn't issued the invoice yet. Future dates aren't allowed.

How do I send an invoice to a client?

Open the invoice and save it as a PDF (“Print → Save as PDF”), then send it however you like. Sending by email straight from Tally and pay-by-link are planned.

Does Tally help with taxes and returns?

Not yet — and we don't want to overpromise. A tax module is in progress: an income/expense journal, a hint on how much to set aside for taxes, and a calendar of VID deadlines that takes your form (SDV/IK) and regime into account.

All calculations will be estimates and won't replace advice from an accountant or VID.

Security & data

How safe is my data?

Tally only stores and shows what you uploaded: it has no access to your bank or money. Passwords are stored only as hashes and sign-in is protected by a session.

You can wipe your data or delete your account in Settings at any time.

Who receives my data?

Only those the service can't run without: hosting and the database, and — for receipt photos — an AI provider (fal.ai, Google Gemini by default) purely to read the text.

We don't sell data, don't show ads and don't use your data to train models. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Do you track me on the site?

No advertising or analytics cookies and no third-party trackers. We keep our own anonymised visit statistics without cookies: IP addresses aren't stored and a visitor is only recognised within a single day.

Turn on “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” in your browser and you won't be counted at all.

How do I delete my account?

In Settings, at the very bottom — the “Danger zone”: wipe only your financial data (the account stays) or delete the account entirely. Deletion is immediate and permanent.
